About Schizophrenia

Schizophrenia weighs heavily not only on people who suffer from it, but also on the people who love those suffering from it. Dealing with the symptoms plus the challenges of medication makes it an especially demanding illness for everyone involved.

Schizophrenia is a mental illness that interferes with the ability to think clearly, see reality from fantasy, and make decisions. It also can make it difficult for some people to manage emotions and relate to others.

There is no one single cause of schizophrenia. Research shows it may be the result of many factors, including an imbalance of certain chemicals in the brain.

It's Important to Know:

No one fully understands why some people get schizophrenia. We do know it's definitely not the fault of the person who has been diagnosed with the disease. But since more than 2.4 million Americans today have this illness, you're not alone.

Symptoms:

Symptoms of schizophrenia can include hallucinations, delusions, paranoia, and withdrawal from family and friends.

Hallucinations Hearing voices, seeing things, or sensing things that
aren't there. Delusions.Strongly believing something is true or real that's obviously false to other people.
					Paranoia. Unusual suspiciousness.

Treatment:

Right now, there is no cure for schizophrenia, but it is treatable. Many people successfully manage the disease through a combination of medications, counseling, and a support system.

Remember:

A diagnosis doesn't change who you are. Just as a person who is diagnosed with cancer isn't just a cancer patient, someone who is diagnosed with schizophrenia is more than just a disease.
